ExpanDam

ExpanDam is an inflatable rubber dam designed to function as a sewer gate within combined sewer pipes. In combined sewer systems, stormwater and wastewater flow together to the treatment plant, and heavy rainfall can overwhelm the system. To prevent this, part of the flow can be stored temporarily. By installing an ExpanDam, the existing sewer pipe can serve as temporary storage, allowing the flow to be controlled so the treatment plant is not overloaded. These inflatable dams are typically air-filled rubber dams with special features that allow them to seal off round, horseshoe-shaped, or rectangular sewer structures.

Benefits of ExpanDam

  • Easy to install in existing sewer systems
  • Simple design with low maintenance
  • Electrical and mechanical components housed in accessible service shafts
  • Existing sewer pipes serve as temporary storage during peak flows
  • Quick response time for regulating flow during storm events
  • Flexible design that adapts to various pipe sizes and shapes
  • Helps reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs) and improve system performance
  • Minimal modifications needed to the existing sewer network
